The Louisiana Folic Acid
Council seeks to promote the use of folic acid among all women of
child bearing age in order to prevent birth defects. Preventing
these neural tube birth defects saves a woman and her family from
possibly losing a fetus or an infant, or from giving birth to a
child who will be forever affected by their defect.
FOLIC ACID is a B vitamin that aids in proper cell growth. The United States Public Health Service recommends that all women of childbearing age take 400 micrograms (0.4mg) of folic acid daily. The best way to get this amount is to take a supplement or a multivitamin, but there are also many foods that are good sources of folic acid. Since more than half of all pregnancies are unplanned it is important that women take folic acid NOW, before they even begin thinking about having a baby!
